Temporary.
Contemporary.
Introducing Zero
The Apennines are the backbone of Italy, an outstanding and central territory in the physical, historical, economic and cultural geography of the Country, full of fragility but also of extraordinary potential. In the heart of the Apennines, among the Sibillini Mountains, the wide-open scars left by the earthquake of 2016 have so far not provoked — as one would hope and as would be needed — considerations and visions commensurate with the challenges that await these territories, where communities and the life itself are gradually evaporating into indifference.
Project Zero is pragmatic and optimistic: it intends to investigate a new archetype, to represent an advanced point of research — activated bottom-up between local companies and professionals, albeit with the patronage of the public institutions involved — in the creation of an uncompromising architectural space in terms of settlement, structure, energy and frugal use of resources, in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains.
Zero intends to represent a territorial garrison, an open, visionary and at the same time respectful of the context, that foreshadows a concrete possibility of technologically excellent and at the same time perfectly reversible intervention in a territory that has been for centuries – and that deserves to return soon to be – a laboratory of innovation.
The action, temporary and experimental in nature, aims to test and monitor in the field the possibilities of resistance, resilience and adaptability of a light industrialized architecture and quick installation in extreme conditions, with the prospect of a future, real reuse elsewhere once the conditions that activated its realization are over: impermanence, reversibility and reuse are the topics that will be investigated and deepened.
Zero is a qualified architectural space, without the defects of constructions, which intends to animate an extraordinary territory with actions and public initiatives of international caliber. In order to demonstrate that architecture can represent a concrete possibility of requalification and a real look to the future.
On the shoulders of giants. Again.
The name Zero is motivated by the programmatic features of the system: zero waste and zero scrap during construction and post- removal, zero emissions in the operational phase of the architecture, off-grid and without the need for connection to gas and electricity supplies. A watertight cycle phytopurification plant, also completely removable without residues, allows the perfect adherence to the hygienic and sanitary standards of the temporary construction.
Self-heating photovoltaic panels and an a battery pack guarantee the complete energy autonomy of the building even at night and in winter. In case of snow storms and ineffectiveness of the photovoltaic panels, in the presence of guests inside, optical sensors integrated in the roof trigger a backup generator that guarantees the recharge of the accumulators for at least 3 days.
Zero waste is also considered during the life cycle of the building: the system is equipped with a recovery system for rainwater and snow thawing water, which is suitably treated and purified and reused for sanitary drains. The wastewater drains and manholes are thermally insulated and heated by the flow of domestic hot water generated by the heat pump integrated in the heating system.
Zero is the result of the composition of parametrically dimensioned structural/functional units: a Living module (convivial and living area), a Lodge module (sleeping area) and a Service Core module (which includes all the service rooms: bathroom, kitchenette, systems room and batteries protected from external temperature shocks) assembled in a variable composition according to the expected size and geometry of the site. The living and service modules are installed on a base grid that includes the ground anchoring and levelling system, structural counterweights, rainwater and thawing water collection and purification tanks.
The design is based on the small-scale construction tradition of the regular solid with a double-pitched roof, with subtle variations on the theme. The result is a reassuring volume in terms of geometry, but completely free of any eaves and with flush external windows for aerodynamic reasons.
Bringing legacy forward
History is nothing more than a sequence of different contemporaneities. Project Zero intends to represent a new benchmark for speed of execution, construction quality, reliability, energy efficiency and lightness. The aim is to make it the contribution of the design, critical, technological and manufacturing skills of 2020 to the enhancement and emancipation of the Monti Azzurri territory, with its feet firmly planted in the thousand-year-old legacy of local minor architecture but with an eye to the future.
MATERIALS
The supporting structure of the parametric modules is made of IFC- certified, formaldehyde-free glulam from controlled forests. For the cantilevered modules, the structure is in counter-braced steel mixed with purlins in glulam.
The detachable infill panels (including flooring) have a breathable package with wood fibre insulation.
The waterproofing of the roof is sheath-free, guaranteed by a double seaming aluminium sheet system, which can be completely disassembled, reassembled and 100% recyclable at the end of its life. The interior of the spaces is completely covered with exposed solid wood staves, treated with non-toxic water-based impregnating agents to guarantee protection and hygiene. The external cladding is made of solid wood shingles from local supply chains. All components are screwed firmly to ensure subsequent disassembly.
Full-LED lighting with extremely high luminous efficiency, thermal and hydronic heat pump system with radiant floor, airtight fireplace, advanced home automation systems for access and comfort management (light, temperature, communication): the accredited guest can also manage the system from his smartphone.
A telephone system and satellite internet connection connected to the building’s uninterruptible power supply is always operational in case of emergency.
